Reading the recipes of ancestors also gives an insight into the world that they lived in and the ingredients available for cooking. Contrast with the society that we live in and I'm really not sure which I prefer especially considering the amount of meat we eat, the poor quality and the environment in which it's reared. Long live the free range chicken!

Thank you, AM, for the sweet words! Made my day!

It's amazing to me how recipes can shrink space and time and create a bond that I was never able to have in real life with my father's mother. It really is cool. I'm so grateful.

That was beautifuly written! Funny, I've been thinking a lot about my grandmother on my fathers side lately. She passed away when I was 17, before I even knew that I enjoyed cooking...not that it would have mattered since her favorite words were "get out of my kitchen." She too was from Alabama and she was an amazing cook. Best fried chicken and homemade biscuits in the world and she never taught anyone else how to make them. Sometimes I wish so much that I had been able to study under her just a bit before she left. Anyway, I wanted to thank you for so eloquently putting into words what has been rolling around inside of me lately. It was somewhat cathartic for me. :)
